La palabra estanflación la inventó, en 1965, el entonces ministro de finanzas británico, Ian McLeod, para hacer referencia a una situación económica de elevada inflación y bajo crecimiento. Así lo dijo en un discurso pronunciado en la Cámara de los Comunes: “We now have the worst of both worlds: not just inflation on the one side or stagnation on the other. We have a sort of ‘stagflation’ situation”.
